{"id":5398,"date":"2017-09-20T17:47:25","date_gmt":"2017-09-20T15:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/insights.invyo.io\/africa\/?p=5398"},"modified":"2017-09-20T17:49:20","modified_gmt":"2017-09-20T15:49:20","slug":"digital-literacy-to-drive-financial-inclusion-in-tanzania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/insights.invyo.io\/africa\/fintech-education\/digital-literacy-to-drive-financial-inclusion-in-tanzania\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital literacy to drive financial inclusion in Tanzania"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p><strong>In a recent post published on the World Economic Forum, Faraja Kotta Nyalandu, founder &amp; Executive Director at Shule Direct, shared her experience\u00a0when visiting a village in Arusha city with African students.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>In a continent where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/new\/en\/dakar\/education\/literacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>38 % of African adults<\/strong><\/a> (some <strong>153 million people<\/strong>) are illiterate according to the UNESCO, Faraja wanted to know more about the <strong>learning process in Tanzania<\/strong> and decided to visit Jifundishe, a non-governmental organization supporting projects <strong>educational opportunities in rural Tanzania<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, <strong>secondary-school students<\/strong> were not the only participants during the <strong>learning sessions<\/strong>, but a much diverse range of people were coming regularly such as millennials, older men and mamas (even nursing mamas). According to the same study published by the UNESCO, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/new\/en\/dakar\/education\/literacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>two-third of illiterate poeple are women<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">What she discovered was that learning was <strong>not restricted to age<\/strong>, but more of an <strong>answer to human needs<\/strong>. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The best example is the farmer who is set to learn how to operate his\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-countries\/articles\/2017-01-05\/the-benefits-of-mobile-money-in-kenya\">mobile money<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0account on his mobile phone to run his business properly.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Once a farmer is able to make transactions through his mobile phone \u2013 whether for sales or to buy better seeds \u2013 his improved yields won\u2019t be down to the fact he owns a phone so much as because he could make use of the opportunities it provided.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Most of the adults who were attending to Jifundishe were trying\u00a0to get a <strong>Secondary School Education certificate<\/strong>\u00a0since they never had the chance to have one in their early life.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Faraja&#8217;s goal was also to alert people to the usefulness of their computer lab.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<blockquote><p>To many people a computer might as well be a cardboard box, unless they know what it can do and how it can add value to their lives.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">According to her, tech is <strong>not just efficient<\/strong> but also <strong>cost-effective<\/strong>, and a far better deal for money than going without.
