{"id":5460,"date":"2017-09-17T09:50:21","date_gmt":"2017-09-17T07:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/insights.invyo.io\/africa\/?p=5460"},"modified":"2017-09-15T10:05:25","modified_gmt":"2017-09-15T08:05:25","slug":"factsfigures-mobile-financial-services-in-africa-by-mckinsey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/insights.invyo.io\/africa\/fintech-corner\/factsfigures-mobile-financial-services-in-africa-by-mckinsey\/","title":{"rendered":"[Facts&#038;Figures] Mobile financial services in Africa by McKinsey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Techfoliance is extracting key data and facts from industry reports on the rise of Fintech in Africa so that you can focus on what matters the most for you.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this report published on September 2017, the consulting firm McKinsey&amp;Co identified how banks can compete in <strong>Africa\u2019s diverse mobile money<\/strong> markets by offering <strong>distinctive mobile<\/strong> and <strong>digital services<\/strong> not only in <strong>payments and deposits<\/strong>, but across the spectrum of <strong>financial services<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>[divider]Key Figures[\/divider]<\/p>\n<p>Just over <strong>50% of the 282 mobile money services<\/strong> operating worldwide are located in <strong>Sub-Saharan Africa<\/strong>, according to the GSMA.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In Africa today, there are <strong>100 million active mobile money accounts<\/strong> (used by <strong>one in ten African<\/strong> adults).\u00a0This far exceeds customer adoption in <strong>South Asia<\/strong>, the second-biggest region for mobile money in terms of market share, with <strong>40 million active mobile money accounts<\/strong> (used by <strong>2.6%<\/strong>\u00a0of adults).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>M-Pesa<\/strong> now accounts for <strong>less than a quarter<\/strong> of <strong>MFS users<\/strong> in Africa.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In recent years (2013\u201316), the <strong>number of active mobile money<\/strong> users has grown by <strong>more than 30 percent<\/strong> annually.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Margins on payments<\/strong> in Africa remain among the <strong>highest in the world<\/strong>, at approximately<strong> 2%<\/strong> of the transaction value.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Africa&#8217;s two leading mobile money providers earn <strong>$550 million and $200 million<\/strong> in annual <strong>mobile financial services revenues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Beyond<strong> M-Pesa<\/strong> (<strong>26 million registered users in Kenya<\/strong>, of which approximately 73% are active), there are several other providers that have been highly successful in this category in Africa, including <strong>MTN Mobile Money<\/strong>, with <strong>41 million registered customers<\/strong> (approximately 38% active) across <strong>15 countries<\/strong>;
