{"id":5595,"date":"2018-02-17T17:23:27","date_gmt":"2018-02-17T16:23:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/insights.invyo.io\/africa\/?p=5595"},"modified":"2018-02-19T18:24:18","modified_gmt":"2018-02-19T17:24:18","slug":"mojaloop-an-open-source-banking-software-to-better-serve-unbanked-in-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/insights.invyo.io\/africa\/fintech-corner\/mojaloop-an-open-source-banking-software-to-better-serve-unbanked-in-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Mojaloop&#8221;, an open-source banking software to better serve unbanked in Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The\u00a0Bill and Melinda\u00a0Gates Foundation has been partnering with Fintech start-ups around the world to support financial inclusion in emerging countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last October 2017, the Gates Foundation launched\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mojaloop.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;Mojaloop&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0, an open-source banking software,\u00a0in collaboration with five Fintech scale-ups: Ripple, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dwolla.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Dwolla<\/strong><\/a>, ModusBox, Software Group, and Crosslake Technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Coming from the\u00a0Swahili word &#8216;moja&#8217; (meaning &#8216;one&#8217;), the project is dedicated to financial services companies, government regulators, and others taking on the<strong> challenges of interoperability<\/strong> and <strong>financial inclusion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a recent interview with <em>Inc.,\u00a0<\/em>Kosta Peric, the foundation&#8217;s deputy director of Financial Services for the Poor, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The reason these people are unbanked is that typically they are remote from any traditional banking branches or ATMs, [and] traditional banks are not well equipped to serve them.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One one hand, you have a growing number of individuals who <strong>use mobile digital wallets to manage their savings<\/strong>, while on the other hand there are many businesses that are still reluctant to serve the poorest.<\/p>\n<p>One of the challenges that the &#8220;Mojaloop&#8221; is trying to address is the <strong>ability for digital banking softwares<\/strong> to be used anywhere by foreign financial institutions. Just take the example of M-Pesa that reached <strong>18<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>millions of customers in Kenya<\/strong>, but has yet to be adopted in Rwanda and Uganda.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The next wave of innovation that this [Mojaloop] unlocks is that now you can connect not only the mobile money systems but also the traditional banks,&#8221; explained Kosta Peric.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, according to\u00a0Benno Ndulu, governor of the Bank of Tanzania:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Interoperability is necessary both for financial inclusion and market maturity, but it is a complex thing to achieve.
