Nathan Sexer, our reporter and Fintech Analyst, had the great pleasure of meeting Mads Emil, CMO\u00a0of Funderbeam, the first Blockchain-based Crowdfunding platform for SMEs.<\/p>\n

<\/u>About Mads Emil<\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/a>Couple of days ago, I had the chance to meet\u00a0with Mads Emil Dalsgaard<\/em> who joined Funderbeam<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0last January 2016.<\/p>\n

He arrived\u00a0in the company since the initial launch of the trading part of Funderbeam\u2019s platform\u00a0<\/i>that made him\u00a0<\/i>discover the full potential of Blockchain.<\/p>\n

He started his career\u00a0in Berlin\u00a0where he created his own company TrunkBird.<\/p>\n

What is Funderbeam?<\/h3>\n

\u201cFunderbeam is world\u2019s first primary and secondary market for early-stage investments secured by the blockchain and with free data intelligence on +180k startups \/ investors.\u00a0Their<\/em>\u00a0mission is to make it easy to invest and trade in growth companies so that great teams and investors everywhere can create a world where good ideas always win.<\/em>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Funderbeam<\/strong><\/a> raises funds from multiple investors like a traditional crowdfunding platform.
\nThe problem with existing solutions is that:<\/p>\n

\u201cOn average investment are locked down from 4-9 years. There is absolutely no liquidity<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

With Funderbeam, investors can sell their shares<\/strong> to any other investors \u2013 sort of like a stock exchange \u2013 you trade SME\u2019s shares<\/strong>, digital tokens<\/strong> for whatever price you want. It only requires that the offer matches the demand.
\n<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

How does it work?<\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Specific coins are created each time: initial investments are put into a SPV and funds are pooled into this vehicle. For the startup, there is only one legal entity. Trading also happens under this SPV.<\/p>\n

Each coin equals 1 fiat currency. Each individual token contain a fraction of a Bitcoin (1\/1000000). The Bitcoin blockchain is being used in the background. Traded with fiat currencies (\u20ac) and the Bitcoin ledger is used to verify all the trades but users don\u2019t have to deal with Bitcoins as they don\u2019t see them.<\/p>\n

Story<\/h3>\n

Funderbeam\u00a0started trading in July 2016.\u00a0The\u00a0company has seen 180k worth of trades<\/strong> in the platform and raised a total of 2.3M\u20ac<\/strong>.\u00a0In the last 3 months, more trades were made\u00a0on the platform than during the whole last year.<\/p>\n

Around 30 people<\/strong> are now working at Funderbeam\u00a0and the number of employees more than doubled in less than\u00a0a year.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0company is now looking to expand\u00a0to other makets like Singapore, New Zealand, Sydney or Japan to figure\u00a0out where the regulation and market are best suited for them.<\/p>\n

Why Blockchain?<\/h3>\n

\u00ab\u00a0To be frank: the all way we have set it up, we could have done it without blockchain, however, the blockchain provides an added layer of security, and in the future, it can allow us to do awesome things like trading the tokens outside the platform.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to the team, the main value-added of Blockchain<\/strong> is clearly the fact that the\u00a0company is able to detect any fraud<\/strong> with timestamps in case the platform gets hacked.\u00a0It adds another security layer and more transparency<\/strong> to the process (and verify all the transactions on the public ledger).<\/p>\n

\u201c We have requests of people to ask what\u2019s on the ledger and we can provide them with tools to verify transactions.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Reducing friction<\/strong> IS also the biggest challenge for Blockchain right now.\u00a0\u201cNo one knows what’s gonna be the next killer app; Remittances & Bitcoin are the only proven use cases right now. When the Value will be obvious, Friction will be ignored\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n
