{"id":6017,"date":"2018-06-07T15:00:02","date_gmt":"2018-06-07T15:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/insights.invyo.io\/europe\/?p=6017"},"modified":"2018-06-08T07:21:32","modified_gmt":"2018-06-08T07:21:32","slug":"the-banking-industry-needs-more-academic-research-like-ubri","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/insights.invyo.io\/europe\/industries\/education\/the-banking-industry-needs-more-academic-research-like-ubri\/","title":{"rendered":"The banking industry needs more blockchain research like UBRI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Students and faculty around the world are emerging as major contributors to the creation of a more robust and valuable blockchain and payments ecosystem. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New business use cases are emerging with the use of the blockchain to make cross-border payments faster, lower the costs and make it more transparent.<\/p>\n<h3>UBRI At a glance<\/h3>\n<p>Ripple announced few days ago a\u00a0<strong>$50 million investment<\/strong> in the University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI), a collaboration with <strong>top universities<\/strong> around the world to <strong>support and accelerate academic research<\/strong>, technical development and innovation in <strong>blockchain<\/strong>, <strong>cryptocurrency<\/strong> and <strong>digital payments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The first wave of university partners\u00a0is including <strong>17 prestigious institutions<\/strong> around the world, that will try to<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a01\/ <strong>Stimulate widespread understanding<\/strong> and innovation in blockchain; 2\/ <strong>C<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><strong>reate new curriculum to meet high student<\/strong> demand for learning about blockchain or cryptocurrency; and 3\/\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><strong>Stimulate ideas and dialog among students<\/strong>, faculty, technologists and business leaders on topics of shared interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Use cases<\/h3>\n<p>As the regulatory conversation continues to evolve in the public sector, the Center for Information Technology Policy (CITP) at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.princeton.edu\/\">Princeton University<\/a>\u00a0is creating an UBRI program that will study the <strong>policy impact of cryptocurrencies and blockchain<\/strong> in the U.S. and around the world.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>At\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upenn.edu\/\">The University of Pennsylvania<\/a>, UBRI is supporting select MBA-MS candidates each year in a newly established Wharton-Engineering dual-degree program. This funding aims to <strong>prioritize students working on blockchain<\/strong> or cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>As part of UBRI, Ripple is also participating in <strong>MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab<\/strong>\u2019s new FinTech initiative made up of a nearly a <strong>dozen companies<\/strong> across the financial services industry to work with groups of CSAIL\u2019s <strong>116+ researchers<\/strong> on topics like blockchain, cryptocurrencies, cybersecurity and global payments.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In Europe,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tudelft.nl\/en\/\">Delft University of Technology<\/a>\u00a0in the Netherlands and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/\">University of Luxembourg<\/a>\u00a0are <strong>building a new blockchain research program<\/strong> inside their Departments of Computer Science and Engineering with the help of UBRI.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>As the traditional backbone of innovation, universities uniquely offer an independence and rigor that the private sector cannot.<\/p>\n<p>They also are responsible for training the workforce of the future, helping to address the demand for technological solutions and talent to solve the world\u2019s hardest financial problems.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students and faculty around the world are emerging as major contributors to the creation of a more robust and valuable blockchain and payments ecosystem.
