An award-winning film on financial inclusion in Guatemala

0

Living on One Dollar is an award-winning film that has been called “A Must Watch” by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus and Director of The Hunger Games, Gary Ross.

The movie follows the journey of four friends who are travelling across rural Guatemala with only $1 a day during two months. As shown in the trailer below, the friends experience extreme financial stress as they attempt to survive life on the edge:

The story began while in Guatemala, four friends released short YouTube videos about the experience to help their friends learn alongside them in real time. The videos quickly received over 700,000 views, inspiring them to complete a feature-length film, Living on One Dollar, to mobilize others to help end extreme poverty.

We thought that it was worth publishing this story on Techfoliance to help you better understand the challenges in emerging countries in terms of financial inclusion and how Fintech could, in some ways, contribute to improve the lives of millions of people across the world.

Financial Literacy in LATAM with Monee

0

Financial inclusion does not only mean giving people access to traditional financial products and services, it also means teaching people the basics of finance to help them better understand how to save or pay.

Alberto Gómez and Gabriel Lopez launched Monee last year to try to reduce financial illiteracy across Latin America with first roots in Colombia.

In a recent interview made to Banknxt and conducted by Phil Siarri, Alberto Gómez said:

“Our mission is to help people manage their money for their own benefit. We think that Monee can help users reach a better life and stop stressing out about financial matters”.

According to a recent survey published by S&P Global FinLit, Latin America is lagging behind in terms of financial literacy:

The team aim to bring tangible and simple educational tools to assist people in managing their personal finance through products like a mobile app, e-books, online courses or newsletters. Right now, most of the content is shared in Spanish.

Monee wants to teach people the basics of finance in order for them to take their own financial decisions while avoiding the risks associated to fraudulent offerings.

Financial education is a real concern in Latin America and we need more actors like Monee to let people understand what is done with their savings in countries where most people are still financialy excluded.

The cryptocurrency Zcash is now available on Ripio exchange

1

Zcash is one of the fastest growing digital currency after Bitcoin. Ripio is the first platform that allows access to the cryptocurrency with Argentine pesos.

Zooko Wilcox (creator of Zcash) made the announcement officially with Sebastián Serrano (CEO and co-founder of Ripio).

Zcash is one of the most innovative and disruptive digital coins in the ecosystem. Among the advantages over Bitcoin, Zcash offers lower transaction costs (more than 20x cheaper) and shorter transaction confirmation times. It also can be stored in a digital wallet and can be used as a means of payment for international transfers.

Zcash technology is growing steadily, which gives it the necessary backing to consolidate itself as one of the most promising cryptones. In that sense, it was recently incorporated into the JP Morgan blockchain platform, the world’s largest market capitalization bank and one of the most prestigious financial institutions, which gave a fundamental impetus to the development of the criptomoneda.

“Zcash is today one of the most promising cryptones, mainly due to its characteristics of technological innovation and with more traction at the moment and also by its great team of developers. We are very proud to incorporate this technology into our platform, “commented Serrano.
